Jag hör dig när du gråter

Pencil, marker and lipstick, 2015

During the summer of 2015 I was invited by Norrköping’s theater company to participate in an exhibition in the old prison of Norrköping with Love Dahlstedt, Cecilia Edefalk, Aldis E Hoff, Peter Johansson, Anders Krisár, Desirée Koslin, Lars Olof Loeld, Olov Rasch and Stefan Teleman. The prison was used from the 18th century and only closed down in 2013. As artists we were each given one cell on the third floor of the east wing to use as our exhibition space.

After walking around in the prison one evening with a large bunch of keys that opened all the doors, I decided to let the voices of the former inmates be heard rather than my own. I chose to collect all the graffiti that still remained on the prison walls. By photographing every single mark in all 82 cells and copy them to my cell with the help of different pencils an markers, I worked as a curator. Voices that had never left the area or been seen by anyone other than the staff and other inmates, got a chance to be heard. Jag hör dig när du gråter (I hear you when you cry) consists of small private messages, anger, stickers from eaten fruits, longing, training schedules, hatred of the police, betrayal and love from the people who have been denied communication with the outside world.

Read about my meeting with Jonas Klinteberg (journalist and former inmate at the prison) and his words about cell 6, where we both spent time, but under very different circumstances.
